Tokujiro Hirata

Atsujiro Hirata, who held key positions in various companies affiliated with the former Mitsui zaibatsu, became president of Shibaura Engineering Works Co., Ltd. (now Toshiba Corporation). During his tenure, he revitalized the company, which had fallen into financial difficulties due to the Great Depression, through industrial rationalization and cartelization. He also contributed to the establishment of Tokyo Shibaura Electric Co., Ltd. (now Toshiba Corporation) through the merger with Tokyo Electric Company. The assets he accumulated were inherited by his second son, architect Shigeo Hirata. In addition, his daughter Mina was married to Masashi Shimizu, who held executive roles including the first president of Hankyu Department Store Co., Ltd. (now H2O Retailing Corporation).

Shigeo Hirata

Shigeo Hirata, who studied in the United States before World War II, contributed to the design and construction of buildings primarily associated with the Mitsui zaibatsu, alongside Gunpei Matsuda. The former residence of Shojiro Ishibashi (founder of Bridgestone Corporation), now serving as the official residence of the U.S. Ambassador to Japan, is characterized by a modernist façade and interiors featuring Art Deco design, reflecting Hirata’s architectural strengths. In addition, the father-in-law of his eldest daughter, Hatsuko, was Genzō Katō, who served as the sixth stationmaster of Tokyo Station and the first general manager of Chinzanso Villa (now known as Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo).
